ASUU's Demands Unrealistic, Says Ezekwesili

ASUU's Demands Unrealistic,
A former Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, on Sunday said that the demands by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) were unrealistic in light of the current economic situation in Nigeria. Ezekwesili said this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan while reacting to the ongoing strike embarked upon by the union.
The former minister said that lasting solution to the crisis bedevilling the education sector could only be found from strong analysis of the issues raised by ASUU and evidenced based policies. According to her, a structural and policy change which allows public and private investments should be integrated into the university system.
“Money is not limitless and yet everyone must acknowledge that investment in education is crucial and it is key. There are, however, some fundamental reforms that the sector needs in order to ensure that it is not about the size of the funding but about the productivity of the funding. You cannot simply express a desire, it must be founded on reality and that means you must know what can be achieved within a given period,” she said.

Omg! Lautech Final Year Student Hanged Himself In His Hostel (Photo)

A final year student of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, Oyo State, Adesoji Adediran at the weekend committed suicide by hanging himself in the hostel.
It was gathered that the 500-level student of Urban and Regional Planning Department hanged himself in the school’s hostel on Saturday.
It was learnt that his roommates, who had been away for a night study, returned in the morning to find his corpse dangling from the ceiling.
The school management was said to have been alerted, which informed policemen from the Owode division, who removed the remains. The corpse was said to have been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy.

A classmate of the victim, who asked not to be identified, said Adediran’s remains were found around 5.30am, PUNCH reports.
He said, “He has two roommates. The roommates went for a night study on Friday. When they returned to the room on Saturday, they discovered that he had hanged himself with a cable. Nobody has an idea why he killed himself.”
A close friend of the victim, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed surprise at Adediran’s death.
He said, “As his friend, what pained me most was that we still played together on Friday night. He never opened up to me. We asked him to go with us for the night study, but he said he preferred to stay behind. Around 5.30am when we returned, we found his corpse.
He was almost done with his final year project and he never complained of anything. We are a clique and we eat together; it was all fun, until we found his corpse.”
He described the deceased as “funny and lively”, saying Adediran couldn’t have suffered from depression.
He said the police from the Owode division removed the corpse from the room.
Our correspondent learnt that the police took statements from the roommates, which were later withdrawn by the deceased’s parents, who insisted on not pursuing any case due to the nature of the death.
According to the PUNCH, the parents also objected to the idea of holding a candle-light procession in his honour, saying they wanted him to “rest in peace.”
This is just as tributes have continued pouring in from friends of the victim on Facebook. A friend, who identified himself as Horlarholu Xarmoohel Cartel, said the late Adediran was a fan of the Chelsea Football Club.
He said:
“Adesoji, can’t believe my eyes when I saw adieu in your name. I don’t know this is what you mean when you said, ‘I am not coming to class again,’ after we sat for a test last week. Haa! SOJ, the best Chelsea fan I ever knew; the best record keeper who doesn’t need Google before he tells you history of football. Already missing you bro, can’t get hold of myself since I heard about your death. I know God knows best.”
Another friend, Adepeju Babatudne, wrote:
“Hmmm, I saw him and Tayo (bestie) beside my hostel cracking jokes with friends when we finished that test. I even accused him of not coming for the test, but he replied, ‘I came nah…’ I don’t even know what to write right now because I know what you passed through when we were in 200 level, but why now? Rest on dear.”
When contacted, an official of the school said the management was not aware of the incident. He, however, promised to get back after contacting a director in the school. He had yet to do so as of press time.
The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ajisebutu Adekunle, said, “The deceased committed suicide by hanging himself on the ceiling fan. He didn’t leave any suicide note. The case is under investigation. Meanwhile, the corpse has been deposited at LAUTECH morgue for autopsy.”

Chelsea To Block Victor Moses From Super Eagles Friendlies (Read)

Victor Moses could still pull out of Nigeria’s international friendly games against Senegal and Burkina Faso this weekend, despite featuring for Chelsea in their 2-1 win over Stoke City last weekend.
Moses picked up a calf problem in their 1-0 win over Manchester United in the FA Cup last Monday and was set to miss three weeks of action.
But he started for Antonio Conte’s side at the Britannia, as they continued their march towards the Premier League title.
However, Allnigeriasoccer.com reports that Chelsea have informed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that the player is injured.
“Chelsea have confirmed Victor Moses’ injury but he has not fully pulled out of the Super Eagles squad yet,” an NFF insider said.
The Super Eagles play Senegal on March 23 and Burkina Faso four days later, both at the Hive Stadium in London.

Nigerian Government Encouraging Corruption In Universities- SSANU

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSAN, has accused the Federal Government of encouraging corruption in universities across the country.
According to the union, the FG’s refusal to suspend vice-chancellors of universities who were facing corruption prosecution showed that they were supporting corruption in the academic sector.
SANU said if the Federal Government could force judges being prosecuted for alleged corruption to step down from their offices, it would be unfair to allow accused vice-chancellors to preside over the affairs of universities while facing trials.
The association’s call was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of its National Executive Council meeting held at the Federal University, Kashere, Gombe.
The communiqué signed by SSANU’s National President, Mr. Samson Ugwoke, and the National Publicity Secretary, Salaam Abdussobur, was obtained by DAILY POST on Sunday.
According to the communiqué, “NEC-in-Session observed with great worry, the increasing corruption and the consequent intimidation, harassment and victimisation of whistle-blowers who expose the rot and decadence in our universities.
“NEC wondered why vice-chancellors, who are facing criminal prosecutions in competent courts, sit tight in office as in the cases of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, where the vice-chancellors of both universities continue to superintend over the affairs and budgets of the universities, with the active collusion of their governing councils.
“NEC concludes that the Federal Government appears to be encouraging the same corruption it proclaims to fight, with the continued stay in office of these vice-chancellors, who host convocation ceremonies, hold council meetings and take actions that put a moral question on the anti-corruption stance of the Federal Government.
“Further, the Federal Government appears to be operating double standards, if it could insist on the stepping down of Judges being prosecuted for criminal offences, while vice-chancellors are allowed to continue to run amok in universities.
“NEC further observed that the level of sleaze in our universities will remain unchecked, if government does not take firm and decisive steps to nip it in bud. NEC, therefore, advises the government to act decisively and concretely on the growing tide of corruption in our ivory towers.
“If government is, indeed, convinced and determined to stem the tide of corruption in Nigeria, the university system must not be immune from its searchlight. If we are to bequeath our future generations an incorruptible legacy, then our universities and institutions of learning must be monitored closely.”

TOP 5 The Dirtiest Attractions Of The World

1. Gum Wall (Seattle, Washington)

Strange tradition has appeared in Seattle and led to the emergence of an extravagant and unhygienic memo – a brick wall near the local theater, completely covered with chewing gum. The tradition began in the 90-ies of the last century. After the “Herculean” efforts of the numerous visitors of the theater, that were trying to get rid of their gum while waiting in queue, the wall has turned to a field of gum. For some people, it is one of the brightest Seattle points of interest, but for others it has a completely repulsive appearance.
2. St. Mark’s Square (Venice, Italy)

When you will choose the best option of hotels in Venice, you have to check out maybe this place of interest is somewhere nearby. Extremely beautiful St. Mark’s Square in Venice has a “reverse side”: hundreds of hungry pigeons, that are flying over the heads of tourists. Although the practice of selling food for birds was finished a few years ago, the probability of being “attacked” and “labeled”  by birds is very high. Some tourists evince a desire to feed them or hold them on their hands, forgetting a few important points:
1) pigeons are leaving their “souvenirs” on clothing or body without warning;
2) there is a ban on feeding pigeons  in Venice, which is provided to fairly substantial fines  for its  failure. This rule is to protect the city memorials from  pigeon droppings.
3. Tomb of Oscar Wilde (Paris, France)

Oscar Wilde joked: “All can be gone through, but death.” However, the brilliant irish writer managed to win a death. Memory about him lives to this day, and thousands of concerned admirers of his talent come to his grave. He was buried in Paris on Père Lachaise Cemetery. A huge monument in the form of a winged sphinx on his grave , decorated with many … kisses. It is a “mecca” for book lovers and admirers of the writer. To express their love and respect, they touch the monument with their lips, leaving on the tombstone multiple lipstick prints.
The authorities approved a fine of 9,000 euros ($ 12,000) for the improper attitude to the memorial, but loving tourists often manages to escape “from the scene” before the police arrived. In 2011, on the occasion of the 111th anniversary of Oscar Wilde’s death, Parisian authorities decided to build a glass fence around the monument. From now on, fans are leaving traces on the glass, throwing flowers and notes over the fence.
4. Blarney Stone (Blarney Castle, Ireland)

According to the legend, the one, who will kiss the stone, which is located in the castle of Blarney, will acquire the gift of eloquence. Each year about 400 thousand people, that would like to speak beautifully from around the world, touch the stone with their lips, leaving billions of microbes. Except the fact, that it is unsanitary, you have know that it also takes a lot of physical effort to kiss it, because the stone is hanging over one’s head.
5. Forecourt of Grauman’s Chinese Theater (California, Hollywood, USA)

You can see the handprints and feet of many stars of world cinema on the forecourt of Grauman’s Chinese Theater on the Avenue of Stars in Los Angeles. They left it in the wet concrete. Millions of fans touch to these prints. But nobody does their disinfection. So before you’ll “measure” your idol’s hands or feet sizes, you should put on gloves or wash your hands after it properly.

11 Ways to Make Money While You Sleep

There is a proven sequence of steps you can follow to guarantee your success when you're starting a small business online, which are by doing the following:
  1. Find a need and fill it.
  2. Write copy that sells.
  3. Design and build an easy-to-use website.
  4. Use search engines to drive traffic to your site.
  5. Establish an expert reputation for yourself.
  6. Follow up with your customers and subscribers with email.
  7. Increase your income through back-end sales and upselling.
Anyone, from newbie to seasoned online entrepreneur, can benefit from this process in learning how to start a business online.

Step 1: Find a need and fill it.

Most people who are just starting out make the mistake of looking for a product first, and a market second.
To boost your chances of success, start with a market. The trick is to find a group of people who are searching for a solution to a problem, but not finding many results. The internet makes this kind of market research easy:
  • Visit online forums to see what questions people ask and what problems they're trying to solve.
  • Do keyword research to find keywords that a lot of people are searching, but for which not many sites are competing.
  • Check out your potential competitors by visiting their sites and taking note of what they're doing to fill the demand. Then you can use what you've learned and create a product for a market that already exists--and do it better than the competition.

Step 2: Write copy that sells.

There's a proven sales copy formula that takes visitors through the selling process from the moment they arrive to the moment they make a purchase:
  1. Arouse interest with a compelling headline.
  2. Describe the problem your product solves.
  3. Establish your credibility as a solver of this problem.
  4. Add testimonials from people who have used your product.
  5. Talk about the product and how it benefits the user.
  6. Make an offer.
  7. Make a strong guarantee.
  8. Create urgency.
  9. Ask for the sale.
Throughout your copy, you need to focus on how your product or service is uniquely able solve people's problems or make their lives better. Think like a customer and ask "What's in it for me?"

Step 3: Design and build your website.

Once you've got your market and product, and you've nailed down your selling process, now you're ready for your small-business web design. Remember to keep it simple. You have fewer than five seconds to grab someone's attention--otherwise they're gone, never to be seen again. Some important tips to keep in mind:
  • Choose one or two plain fonts on a white background.
  • Make your navigation clear and simple, and the same on every page.
  • Only use graphics, audio or video if they enhance your message.
  • Include an opt-in offer so you can collect e-mail addresses.
  • Make it easy to buy--no more than two clicks between potential customer and checkout.
  • Your website is your online storefront, so make it customer-friendly.

Step 4: Use search engines to drive targeted buyers to your site.

Pay-per-click advertising is the easiest way to get traffic to a brand-new site. It has two advantages over waiting for the traffic to come to you organically. First, PPC ads show up on the search pages immediately, and second, PPC ads allow you to test different keywords, as well as headlines, prices and selling approaches. Not only do you get immediate traffic, but you can also use PPC ads to discover your best, highest-converting keywords. Then you can distribute the keywords throughout your site in your copy and code, which will help your rankings in the organic search results.

Step 5: Establish an expert reputation for yourself.

People use the internet to find information. Provide that information for free to other sites, and you'll see more traffic and better search engine rankings. The secret is to always include a link to your site with each tidbit of information.
  • Give away free, expert content. Create articles, videos or any other content that people will find useful. Distribute that content through online article directories or social media sites.
  • Include "send to a friend" links on valuable content on your website.
  • Become an active expert in industry forums and social networking sites where your target market hangs out.
You'll reach new readers. But even better, every site that posts your content will link back to yours. Search engines love links from relevant sites and will reward you in the rankings.

Step 6: Use the power of email marketing to turn visitors into buyers.

When you build an opt-in list, you're creating one of the most valuable assets of your online business. Your customers and subscribers have given you permission to send them email. That means:
  • You're giving them something they've asked for.
  • You're developing lifetime relationships with them.
  • The response is 100 percent measurable.
  • Email marketing is cheaper and more effective than print, TV or radio because it's highly targeted.
Anyone who visits your site and opts in to your list is a very hot lead. And there's no better tool than email for following up with those leads.
Step 7: Increase your income through back-end sales and upselling.
One of the most important internet marketing strategies is to develop every customer's lifetime value. At least 36 percent of people who have purchased from you once will buy from you again if you follow up with them. Closing that first sale is by far the most difficult part--not to mention the most expensive. So use back-end selling and upselling to get them to buy again:
  • Offer products that complement their original purchase.
  • Send out electronic loyalty coupons they can redeem on their next visit.
  • Offer related products on your "Thank You" page after they purchase.
Reward your customers for their loyalty and they'll become even more loyal. The internet changes so fast that one year online equals about five years in the real world. But the principles of how to start and grow a successful online business haven't changed at all. If you're just starting a small business online, stick to this sequence. If you've been online awhile, do a quick review and see if there's a step you're neglecting, or never got around to doing in the first place. You can't go wrong with the basics.

10 Creepiest Abandoned Places on Earth

1. Underwater Lost City Shicheng, China

Fifty-seven years ago, the Xin’an River Hydropower Station trapped the 1,300-year-old Chinese city of Shicheng (Lions City) under water. It was named Lion City after 5 Lion Mountain risen largely behind it. It is truly an astonishing sight. The city stands preserved from destructive forces of erosion, like sun, wind and rain, beneath the Qiandao Lake, so it were almost untouched and managed to stay in pretty good condition. Archeologists call it a “virtual time capsule”, but if you wanna open it, you’ll have to get some scuba gear.
2. Danvers State Insane Asylum
Bet, this time, you’re positive the exteriors for the 2nd season of the AHS: Asylum were filmed in this creepy place. Nope. Wrong again! Danvers State Hospital in Massachusetts has gone by many names; it’s been variously known as the Danvers Insane Asylum, State Lunatic Hospital, even Hell House on the Hill and other such lovely monikers. During its heyday in the 20s and 30s there were controversies over its given out the use of drugs, shock therapy and lobotomies – as a matter of fact, it may have been the birthplace of lobotomy. Eventually, Danvers transformed into unsanitary and equally dangerous place for both the patients and staff. And since its closure it has fallen into a state of despair and severe creepiness. Beware, as it’s one of the most violently haunted asylums in the world.
3. Hotel del Salto — San Antonio del Tequendama, Colombia
No, it’s not the set of American Horror Story: Hotel, even though La Casa del Salto del Tequendama does have a past twisted enough to shoot a movie. It was built up in 1923 and named the Hotel del Santo in the 50s. Picturesque location alongside the Tequendama waterfalls in central Colombia attracted many travelers. A few decades later the level of river pollution caused the hotel’s abandonment. Recently it has been changed into a museum, though. And still, the creepiest part remains the same; many believe that this place is haunted since it was known during its prime time as a site for numerous suicide cases.
4. Pripyat, Ukraine

An abandoned city, located in northern Ukraine, once bustled with almost 500,000 residents is now a radioactive ghost town over-run by nature. In 1986, Pripyat became a ground zero for the deadliest nuclear disaster in history when an ‘accident’ destroyed a reactor and caused deadly radiation to spread throughout the city. The levels of radiation remain too high for people to live there again though it’s safe for tourist to visit. The city will stay abandoned forever, as that much radiation won’t vanish for hundreds of years.
5. House of the Bulgarian Communist Party — Mount Buzludzha, Bulgaria

The Buzludzha monument or the ‘House-Monument of the Bulgarian Communist Party’ used to be a wonder back in the day. Opened in 1981, it served as a symbolic meeting point for the communist regime. But with the fall of the Soviet Union in less than a decade later it went into disrepair; now abandoned, this huge concrete building looks like an alien ship. The extreme location of this otherworldly monument, on Mount Buzludzha, puts it in the path of severe storms, ravaging winds and harsh winters. The outer windows were the first to go, escorted by the most of the metal-tiled roof, which is why the plans are being made to restore it.
6. Kolmanskop, Namibia

Kolmanskop is one of the most famous haunting ghost towns in the world. It is located in the Namib Desert and was founded in the 1900s when first diamond was found in the sand. Within a few years, hundreds of German families set up homes here desperately seeking their fortune. Year by year it has been turning into bustling oasis which had to be abandoned to the wind and sand within just 50 years. Run-down buildings are falling apart, and their insides are filled with sand from the surrounding desert. The remains of Kolmanskop work as a magnet for ghost hunters, which is why De Beers Company set a museum to keep the town in somewhat decent shape and preserve the history of Kolmanskop.
7. Sanzhi UFO Houses, Taiwan

Other-worldly appearance and wacky architecture of these saucer-like houses made them widely known as Sanzhi UFO houses the mysterious “ruins of the future”. Sanzhi Pod City became abandoned two years after it was built. This resort complex was built in 1978 in Taiwan. In 2 years due to some investment issues and other financial losses, the project was abandoned and left to the mercy of time. Sanzhi Pod City managed to find its way onto various A-lists of eerie ghost towns though and even has been used by MTV as a filming location.
8. Red Sands Sea Forts, the United Kingdom

These huge metal Maunsell gun towers were originally constructed in 1943 during the Second World War to protect Britain from the German Navy. The bizarre-looking concrete monsters are named after Guy Maunsell, the engineer that designed them. Some of the towers survived to this day after they were decommissioned and left abandoned in the 50s. A few of them are still standing out as sea, remarkable as ever. Even though their lives weren’t rather long, these forts are outstanding relics of 2WW architectural history.
9. Mirny Diamond Mine – Eastern Siberia, Russia
The second largest excavated hole in the world- Mirny was made by Stalin, who desperately wanted a more independent economy for the USSR. It was the 1st and the largest diamond mine in the Soviet Union. The Mir mine also known as Mirny mine is now inactive after 44 years of surface operation. The mine is 1,722 ft deep and has a diameter of 3,900 ft. It started to develop in 1957. Climate conditions were extremely harsh to mine: 7 winter month of frozen ground vs. brief summer month of the slush-turned ground. And yet Mir mine was producing 10,000,000 carats of diamond/year in the 60s.
10. The Haunting New Bedford Orpheum -U.S.A.

Not only is April 15, 1912, a significant day because of the Auditorium opening, but also it happened to be the day the Titanic sunk. It functioned as the Orpheum for 47 years. This once-mighty theatre space was used to entertain the immense audiences. Since the New Bedford Orpheum closed its doors in 1959, part of the building became a supermarket ant then a warehouse. Sadly today, it remains completely abandoned, and still it never fails to impress, though.
